Dentistry
“Cats are connoisseurs of comfort.” -James Herriot
One of the most important aspects of your pets health is oral health. Maintaining and preventing oral disease is critical to ensure you have a healthy and pain free pet. We will evaluate your pets teeth at every exam and recommend care based on the health of the teeth.
Once tartar has formed it needs to be removed by scaling and polishing the teeth as your dentist does with your teeth. The goal is to thoroughly remove the tartar and invisible plaque both above and below the gum line, which can only be accomplished while an animal is under anesthesia. Tooth scaling will be performed using both hand scalers and ultrasonic cleaning equipment to remove tartar both above and below the gum line. The teeth are then polished to help prevent subsequent plaque build-up. On occasion, we find diseased teeth that require extractions. When this occurs, we use state of the art equipment and techniques to make this as pain free as possible. Full mouth radiographs (x-rays) are also preformed to visualize the bone and roots of the teeth. As with all anesthetic events at Mountain View, animals are continually monitored both during and after their procedure by experienced veterinary technicians utilizing state-of-the-art equipment.
In order to prevent and prolong the time between dental cleanings we recommend daily toothbrushing. This is the best way to maintain you pets oral health. Talk to us about proper techniques. Please make sure a pet friendly tooth paste is being used.
